JDRF Gift Wrap Volunteer Information
The Capitol Chapter of The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) plans and executes a myriad of fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for diabetes research. One of our most popular volunteer events is the Annual Holiday Gift Wrap. This "all volunteer" effort occurs in area malls during the months of November and December. Our 2010 locations are: - Westfield - Montgomery, Bethesda, Maryland
- Mazza Galleria, Washington D.C.
The beginning dates of the Wrap at the Malls vary, depending on the Malls' preference. However, once we're up and running, The JDRF Holiday Gift Wrap is open all Mall hours until closing time on Christmas Eve.
As an "all volunteer" endeavor, one can imagine that we need lots of people - Shift Captains and Wrappers alike!
Here is a brief overview of the responsibilities:
Shift Captains:
- Sign up for a portion of a day - usually from opening to 2PM or 2-5 PM
or 5 pm to closing - or you can take the whole day!
- Recruit people who love to wrap and who are good wrappers. Ask
friends, relatives, co-workers, etc. - Accept emails and calls from other volunteers who wish to wrap on
your shift. - Act as the "head wrapper" for your selected shift. Make sure you
select a shift that is 100% convenient for you and your family. - Supervise the wrappers on your shift. Assure that packages are professionally wrapped - not too much paper, taped securely, tied
ribbons and bows, "knot on the top" ribbon preferred. - Train and re-train volunteers if necessary.
- Maintain order and neatness during your shift.
- Have a great time!
Captains and Wrappers:
- Sign in, put on name tag (first name only) and apron, if provided, familiarize yourself with the layout.
- Greet each customer and explain that this is a fundraiser for JDRF.
- Show customer the sample papers and the Price List - always quote
the cost to the customer before wrapping the gift. (Please note that each Mall has specific requirements that will be specified individually.) - Remove price tags, arrange gift in box with tissue.
- Using the measuring tapes provided, pull the correct amount of paper from the roll. Note: The amount of paper required to wrap each of our boxes is clearly marked to assist the wrappers and reduce waste.
- Wrap the package and secure well with tape.
- Secure ribbon and tie bow to package.
- Put gift tag under ribbon. (The tag is printed to indicate that the gift
was wrapped by JDRF volunteers.) - Make sure to mark packages with recipient's name if customer has multiple boxes.
- Collect funds - cash or checks only. Checks need phone numbers. We do not accept "out of area" checks.
- Thank the customer for supporting JDRF.
- Have a great time!
General: - Please dress professionally - no worn jeans.
- No children are allowed at the Wrap. We do support teens in need of "Community Service" hours, but we prefer to staff each shift with a mixture of adults and teens.
- No food is allowed at the Wrap.
- Drinks are permitted when business is slow - please be careful.
